Citizen-generated data and Remote Sensing Data Integrated in the European Data Spaces
European Data Spaces are designed to enable secure and sovereign data exchange, ensuring that participants retain full control over their data. Among the several data spaces currently under development across the EU, the Green Deal Data Space (GDDS) stands out for its broad scope, which directly intersects with a wide range of environmental data, including remote sensing products and citizen-generated observations.
Join us in Barcelona for a hands-on code sprint during which researchers, developers, and environmental data professionals come together to tackle one of Europe's most pressing data challenges: integrating different types of data into the GDDS, including citizen-generated data and remote sensing.
This is not a theoretical exercise. This code sprint presents a unique hands-on opportunity to test the Proof of Concept of the GDDS recently deployed by SAGE. The practical work will be organized in distinct threads. One thread aims to demonstrate how the remote sensing data, as those created by the OEMC project in the last 3 years, can be exposed in the GDDS. In a second thread, the code sprint will explore how to include citizen-generated data in the GDDS. A third thread will explore how to make the GDDS more useful in combination with other data spaces. The results of this code sprint will be compiled into an Engineering Report that will be presented to the OGC for its approval for publication.
This event is organized by CREAF in collaboration with the OEMC, SAGE, CitiObs, more4nature projects, co-funded by the European Union, and the EuroGEO GDDS Action Group.
This code sprint is previous to the Open-Earth-Monitor (OEMC) Global Workshop 2026, a European conference organized by the OEMC project. This Workshop is the fourth and final edition of this gathering, under the focus topic: “Next-Generation EO & GeoAI Built on Openness and Distributed Data”. It will be held in Barcelona (Spain), on the same venue that this code sprint from 7–9 October 2026, hosted by CREAF and the OpenGeoHub Foundation). Attendance could be a great opportunity!

- Researchers and scientists working with remote sensing, Earth Observation, or citizen-generated environmental data who want to explore how their datasets can be integrated into the GDDS.
- Data engineers and developers capable of developing software around data spaces, APIs, OGC standards, DGGS, or SensorThings API (STAplus) who want to contribute to real-world technical challenges.
- Representatives from EU-funded projects connected to or beyond supporting projects.
- OGC community members and open data & FAIR data advocates interested in testing interoperable, federated data infrastructures.

About the contributing projects
OEMC is an EU-funded project accelerating Europe’s capability to process high-quality, user-friendly, environmental observation based on Earth Observation data and the FAIR principles. At this Codesprint participants will explore how to give access to project results in the GDDS.
SAGE is a Digital Europe co-funded project that is developing a federated, secure and interoperable data space to support key pillars of the European Grean Deal. At this Codesprint SAGE contributes to the testing of the GDDS recently deployed as a Proof of Concept.
CitiObs is an EU co-funded project enhancing citizen observatories for healthy, sustainable, resilient and inclusive cities. At this Codesprint participants will explore how to give access to wearable sensors using DGGS and STAplus in the GDDS.
more4nature is an EU co-funded project that aims to bring about transformative change in environmental protection by including citizens and communities as key actors in collaborative environmental compliance assurance. At this code sprint, participants will explore how to provide access in the GDDS to the citizen-generated data from some of the 40 cases.
EuroGEO GDDS Action Group focuses on defining how the GDDS could contribute to the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). The group’s agenda includes understanding GDDS through existing use cases, consolidating diverse perspectives, discussing governance, and outlining future plans.
